Whether you’re expecting your first or you’ve already got children, having a baby can be an exciting time. And one of the biggest questions you’ll be asked when you’re carrying will be about the gender of your baby. If you want to find out whether you’ll be having a boy or a girl and don’t want to wait for your next ultrasound, check out these five techniques…
- Test with a cabbage
Although this may not be the most typical method of predicting the gender of your baby, many pregnant women have claimed it works. Buy a purple cabbage and chop it up into chunks, before cooking for ten minutes in boiling water. Then, mix equal parts of your urine with cabbage water, and its colour will determine the gender of your baby. If your mixture turns pink or red, you’ll have a boy; if it turns purple, you’ll have a girl.
- Have a DNA test
In some cases, you may want to determine the gender of your baby (and its father) through DNA tests. If you feel like your life is turning the way of Renée Zellweger’s in Bridget Jones’s Baby, then this could be the test for you. Visit a private hospital or site like dadcheckgold, and you’ll be able to put to an end speculation of your baby’s gender – and its father!
- Try the fizz test
Another test that you can use to check the gender of your baby is the “fizz test”. Take some baking soda and add it to your urine sample. If the sample fizzes and bubbles, you’ll have a boy, and if there’s no reaction, then you’re pregnant with a girl. This test works by showing the pH acidity of your urine, which changes depending on the gender of your baby.

- Check the skull
The skull theory gender prediction cannot be scientifically proven, but one rumour suggests that you can determine your baby’s gender based on the shape of its skull. If you’ve already had an initial ultrasound and have a picture of your baby, then you can check it out to see the gender of your baby. Babies with rounded foreheads are thought to be girls, while boys’ foreheads will look flatter, or even be sloped backwards. Of course, ultrasound scans can be interpreted in different ways, so you should ask friends and family for their opinions, too.
- Look at your morning sickness
This is another old wives’ tale that we can’t verify, but it’s worth a mention nonetheless. Some women believe that the way in which they’re sick during pregnancy determines whether they have a boy or a girl. Women are, apparently, sicker in the first three months with a girl than they would be if they had a boy, but carrying a boy can cause pain after the first trimester. However, according to medical professionals, if you suffer badly from morning sickness, then you’re more likely to be carrying a girl than a boy.
There you have it – five ways to predict the gender of your baby before you head for your next ultrasound. Good luck with your pregnancy and your newborn, whatever its gender!
