Self-Care Tips for New Moms

Becoming a mother for the first time in your life can be exciting, joyous, daunting, and overwhelming. I’m pretty sure that there are a few more adjectives that can be thrown into that mix, but I guess you get the picture.

Even the most organized woman can’t be adequately prepared for motherhood since there are some things that you can only know when you become a mother. Some things have to be felt, experienced, and endured.

When you become a new mother, your self-care routine may seem something that is quite difficult to adhere to. After all, how will you manage to take care of your needs after a natural birth when your newborn requires your undivided attention 24/7?

It isn’t surprising to hear new mothers complaining that they don’t have time to eat, let alone shower. However, if you attended the HypnoBirthing ®the Mongan Method classes when you were pregnant, you already understand that you are at work and you deserve to rest.

Get Adequate Rest

Since your newborn baby has no fixed schedule and needs to feed at least seven times a day, you can easily feel overwhelmed by exhaustion if you don’t find time to rest. Although you may not be able to get seven or eight hours of uninterrupted sleep as before, you should always try to catch some sleep when your newborn is sleeping.

You need to keep in mind that this isn’t the right time to bother yourself with so many things at a go. Your primary responsibility should be to take care of your baby and rest. If you don’t feel like sleeping when your baby is doing so, you can just lie down and let your body rest. Sleep deprivation can affect the flow of your breast milk.

Get Support

This is also the right time to find a strong support system. It doesn’t matter whether the support system is your spouse, family member, or friend; make sure that you have someone around who can act as a mother’s helper.

This will provide you with the time you need to take care of other things such as laundry, exercising, and cleaning. You also need people in your life that you can trust and rely on in case of an emergency.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you feel like you are too exhausted. Remember the fact that you deserve support and no matter what, you can’t afford to go it alone.

Exercise

After natural birth, many of the physical changes of pregnancy will start to fade after four to six weeks. As a new mom, you should consider resuming your pre-pregnancy exercises gradually. You can aim to start exercising at least two or three times a week with each workout session lasting approximately 30 minutes.

Make sure that you have at least ten minutes of warm-up and cooling exercises.  Adequate nutrition and hydration are essential before you resume your exercising regime.

Take Time to Shower

Pick a time of the day when you feel like your baby is content and rush to the bathroom.  You can keep your baby busy with a bouncer or swing while in the bathroom. If your baby starts to fuss or cry while you are still in there, start singing a silly song or start to play peek-a-boo with your shower curtain to confuse the baby and buy some time to complete the process.

Although you may have to rush a little bit to be with your baby, you will still feel much better if you are clean and fresh.
