During the cataract removal surgery, the intraocular lens is also removed and replaced during the operation. The focusing power is fixed during the surgery.
The Recovery Process
The recovery after a cataract surgery is quick and painless. The chance of a successful surgery is higher if you do not have any other major eye problem. You will be required to keep your glucose levels and blood pressures in check. It is a surgery after all.
The cataract removal surgery only takes about 10 minutes but the recovery immediately after the operation takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Make sure that you have someone who can drive you home after the surgery and you will be given a pair of sunglasses to keep your eyes protected from bright lights and glare.
Your surgeon will guide you on the recovery details and you might be allowed to remove the protective shield a few hours after the procedure. The protective shield will need to be placed on your eyes for a few days during naps and sleep time at night. The protective shields are to keep your eyes protected from any accidental physical contact from your hands or pillows.
Does It Come Back?
The chances of a cataract coming back are low. Some cells are left behind during the surgery. These cells remain inactive but in a younger person, these cells can wake up and regenerate the outer capsule which was removed altogether. The recreation the capsule can create a cloudiness which causes vision impairment. A smaller procedure is done to permanently remove these cells and particles from the eyes.
This scenario however is only common in younger cataract patients. This condition is normal and shows an active healing process. The aftercare is important for a healthy healing process. Taking some precautions can speed up recovery from the surgery. Avoid driving for the next 24 hours and avoid any extensive exercises for a few weeks. Immediately after the procedure, do not bend or put pressure on your eyes.
Vision will take some time to recover so make sure that you walk around carefully and do not bump into doors or other objects. Make sure that dust, and grime does not go into eyes. Avoid rubbing your eyes for a few weeks. Your eyes will be very sensitive during recovery so keeping all contact away is a good idea.
